How to Stock a Basic Bar

November 22, 2016

It’s getting close to the holiday season which means you will most likely host some guests.  I am always prepared to mix up a cocktail or beverage for guests but if you don’t usually have a lot on hand and want to offer something other than wine and beer to your guests here are my suggestions.  One bottle of each of :

Vodka-I prefer Ketel One but Svedka is a good middle of the road brand as well.  I typically use that for infusions.

Gin-Most people have a personal preference.  I’m a vodka person but my son prefers Hendricks so I try to have that on hand. If you are looking for something a little different I love Uncle Val’s botanical gin which has more of a floral taste.  A friend of mine introduced me to it several years back and it’s become my “go to” for gin.

Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch or Rye-I like to have at least one of these on hand.  My preference is Crown Royal which can be used to make a variety of cocktails or simply served on the rocks.  Both of my Red Delicious and Candy Apple martini’s are made with crown. We’ll save the discussion of scotch, bourbon, whiskey & rye for a future post.

Mixers-I usually have tonic, cola, club soda or seltzer water, maraschino cherries and fresh lemons and limes on hand.  You can quickly mix up a nice cocktail for guests with these staples.

After dinner drinks-Again, there’s a wide variety of beverages to choose from so I’ll leave that up to you.  I typically have Bailey’s Irish cream on hand.  It can be served with coffee, on the rocks and as part of a dessert martini.  Other good options are Frangelico, Godiva chocolate liqueur or Amaretto.

With a quick trip to your favorite liquor store, you’ll ready for those unexpected holidays guests!
