Ice Ice Baby!

June 2, 2017

Lately I’ve seen more variations of ice cubes being served in drinks. I first noticed it a few years back when I started seeing variations of whiskey stones (ceramic, stone and stainless steel) in the stores.  I would assume it has to do with the renewed interest in Bourbon and Whiskey drinks along with the emergence of the craft cocktail.  So now, using a regular ice cube in a cocktail seems a bit boring.  I currently have a number of different ice molds I like to use.  Small squares, ice spheres, wedges and even silicone molds in various shapes.  I have some shaped like tiki heads to pair with my summer cocktails.  There are many types available at party city or any party supply store.  I also like to add fruit (orange, lemon or lime slice) or herbs (basil, mint, cilantro) to the mold to add some flair and additional flavor once it melts.  If you like a cold drink but don’t like to dilute your cocktail try freezing juice instead.  One of the coolest things I’ve seen done lately is to put a container of water with your smoker, once it’s been in there awhile then put that in an ice tray and you have a smokey flavored cube which goes great with bourbon or whiskey.  You can vary the types of wood chips (mesquite, hickory, apple or cherry) you use to get a different flavor.  I prefer cherry.  If you really like this concept Williams Sonoma offers a cocktail smoking box for $249.95.  I also love using Sonic ice in my mojito’s, margarita’s, rum drinks, etc.  You can buy it by the bag from some of the sonic drive in locations for around $8.00.  So worth it!  So the next time you plan to have a cocktail, perk it up with one of these ice cube variations.  Salute!
